Sports activities teach valuable Christian lessons about how to live Biblically, by the fruit of the Spirit, helping children learn respect, perseverance, and optimism.

Sports activities benefit children, helping them stay healthy and identify strengths and interests. Participating in children’s sports also helps kids learn to live Biblically, following the fruit of the Spirit.

Galatians 5:22 says that "…the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control."

Living By Practicing the Fruit of the Spirit

Living "by the Spirit" helps Christians avoid living "of the world." It helps Christians, as the verses say next, avoid becoming “conceited, provoking and envying each other.”

Getting along with others is a good life lesson for children to learn, and growing up to live by the Spirit — to learn love, joy, peace, and all of the other positive attributes listed in Galatians 5:22 — is important for children.

Participating in sports activities can help both children and adults learn to live by the fruit of the Spirit.

The nine fruits of the Spirit can be grouped into three categories of life lessons:

  1. The first set — love, kindness, goodness, gentleness — helps children learn to respect for the self and for others, in addition to teaching kids to work as a team.
  2. The second set — faithfulness, self-control, patience — helps children learn perseverance and self-discipline, which are critical skills in life.
  3. The third set — joy, peace — helps kids cultivate a positive attitude of relaxation and overall health.

Many people believe that these Christian values of respect, perseverance, and optimism give children a positive head-start in life.

These Bible lessons for kids help children in various ways, and the nine fruits of the Spirit emphasize valuable life lessons for everyone:

  • Love
  • Kindness
  • Goodness
  • Gentleness
  • Faithfulness
  • Self-control
  • Patience
  • Joy
  • Peace

These are positive values for children to learn. These are also all attributes described in the Bible as living by the Spirit. Even further, these children’s lessons in Christian living can be learned by participating in sports activities.

Children Learn Positive Christian Values Through Sports Activities

What parents wouldn’t want their children to grow up learning life lessons like getting along with others and living by the Spirit, following important Christian values that help now and later in life?

Parents want their children to learn lessons about teamwork - how to respect themselves and others. Parents want their children to learn lessons about perseverance and self-discipline – how to remain faithful and patient. And parents want their children to learn how to cultivate a positive attitude – one filled with joy and peace.

Participating in sports activities leads children down the path toward positive Christian living, starting them off early with key Bible lessons on how to live and cultivate the fruit of the Spirit.
