Is There Such a Thing as Absolute Truth? The Bible, Rules and Relativism
Are morals relative and where would you draw the line?
Rene Descartes reasoned "I think therefore I am". In other words, if one is able to doubt their existence then they must exist because if they didn’t exist it would obviously not be possible to question their existence. Similarly, if one does not believe in the concept of absolute truth how can they be absolutely certain of anything, or for that matter their theory that absolute truth does not exist? The Bible teaches that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all. (1John 1:5) Many other beliefs contain a dualistic nature of God, including ying and yang, light and dark and a good and bad side. The deity they confess to worship is ambivalent, inconsistent and unknowable and it is fair to comment that the follower is provided with no certainty of where they will go to in the next life. Absolute Truth and AuthorityThe initial problem with the beliefs held above is that if you do not believe there is such a thing as absolute truth then by what authority can you condemn another person's actions regardless of how immoral, depraved or repulsive they may be? So generally speaking, why is absolute truth not a popular concept in contemporary Western society? Absolute truth demands accountability for your actions and for what you say. Also, absolute truth according to the Bible, will invariably contradict what many people think is acceptable and not acceptable. The bottom line is that any society requires rules for their preservation. If all rules were banished in the House of Commons tomorrow we would probably arrive at a state of anarchy before too long. Everyone would be entitled to operate by their own rules and the world would be in a greater mess than it currently is. Worldviews and Absolute TruthSo if someone ignores that there is absolute truth in their worldview, it is probable that their belief system will be inconsistent. The more pressing issue though, is that even if there is such a thing as absolute truth people inevitably make mistakes they regret. That is because contrary to popular opinion, the Bible teaches that mankind is inherently evil and not good. Because of the fall in the Garden of Eden people are born into sin and cannot help sinning. Naturally those who are sick go to see a doctor. If they are honest no one can claim to have perfect health all the time. Jesus claimed to be the One who is able to heal. Jesus the Messiah, the only begotten Son of the Father died for the sins of mankind as there is no way even the most saintly of characters could live a perfect sinless life. Jesus is the divine physician, and paid the sacrifice for once and all, as the Lamb of God who came to take away the sin of the whole world.
