No Cost Internet Tools for Studying God's Word

Nov 22, 2009 Ronald G Falconberry

Hundreds of dollars can be spent on Bible study resources but the Internet contains many web sites which offer a variety of free Bible study tools online.

At one time, anyone who desired to undertake a serious study of the scriptures could expect to spend hundreds of dollars on various versions of the Holy Bible and related Bible study resources. Even today, students of the God's Word can still spend a lot of money on study resources whether in the form of print media or computer software.

For those who are on a budget or simply do not have the money to invest in biblical study materials, many web sites offer an invaluable service by providing free online Bible study resources.

Free Bibles Found Online

Online Bible study resource sites generally provide multiple versions of God's Word such as the King James Version (KJV), New King James Version (NKJV), New International Version (NIV), New Living Translation (NLT), Revised Standard Version (RSV), English Standard Version (ESV) and other popular versions.

Many of the sites also offer the Bible in different languages such as English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Russian, and others.

Free Online Bible Study Tools

The more popular Internet Bible study resource web sites provide a wide variety of free tools for use by those who want to better understand Bible passages.

  • Bible Dictionaries – Much like modern dictionaries, a Bible dictionary concentrates on definitions of words found in the Bible.
  • Commentaries – A Bible commentary, or exegesis, is a textual analysis or interpretation of scripture written by Bible scholars.
  • Concordances – A concordance is an indexed list of key words in the Bible. A brief definition is usually given for each word along with a list of verses where the word is found.
  • Lexicons – Lexicons are dictionaries which define the original Old Testament Hebrew and New Testament Greek terminology.
  • Topical Bibles – A topical Bible is similar to a concordance, except the scriptures are indexed by topics rather than by specific words.

Many of the free Bible study resource sites also offer sermon and lesson outlines, devotionals, and other resources to help people prepare for sermons, classes or private worship. Additional resources may include maps, charts, graphics, photographs or illustrations that may be useful in both Bible study and biblical presentations.

How to Use Free Online Bible Study Resources

A common feature found on Internet Bible study sites is a search engine used to find biblical passages. The name of a Bible book, a chapter number, a specific range of passages, a topic or a list of key words may be entered and the web site then displays a list of biblical passages related to the search criteria.

Once a verse has been displayed, some biblical resource web sites provide links to the various Bible study tools. One link may show other biblical passages related to a specific verse, another link may show the original Hebrew or Greek text while another may display a definition of the original word and ses displayed on the screen. Most sites also allow readers to select which version or language of the Bible to display.
