Praise and Worship with Bible Study to Start the Day Together

Sep 6, 2008 Stella Walsh

It is important for Christian families to start the day together with Bible study in an attitude of praise and worship, creating hope and a connection to God.

Before venturing out into the fast pace of the world, the family can use a morning devotion and Bible study to set the tone for the remainder of the day.

There are several things that can be included in morning devotion. These can be altered or used as suits the needs and available time of the individual family.

Choosing a Place for Family Morning Devotion and Bible Study

Things to keep in mind when choosing a place for morning devotion:

  • The family needs to decide on a location that gives each member a sense of quiet and peace. Preferably, this would be a place that is away from loud noise and distractions.
  • At warm times of the year, some families like to go into their garden - if possible, at sunrise. Teenagers may not be agreeable to this. The adventurous will try it even in winter.
  • If the family lives near a beach or woods, a sunrise walk, while giving thanks and praise, can also be a very moving experience.

Prayers for Family Morning Devotion and Bible Study

It is especially important for the children of the family to hear the adults pray. This provides a model for them to form their own prayers. The family is a safe place for them to attempt praying out loud.

There are several ways to include prayer in a morning devotion:

  • Each member of the family can say their own prayer aloud, giving thanks for the day and for the blessings that will be received during the day. This creates the expectation that God will provide what is needed for that day, and the future.
  • Any events or activities scheduled for that day can be prayed for.
  • Familiar prayers said together may also provide a sense of structure and unity for the family. Prayers such as The Lord’s Prayer are very appropriate for this type of activity.
  • Each member can take a turn on different days leading the prayer.

Scripture Readings for Family Morning Devotion and Bible Study

There are several scripture readings that are particularly nice to read and discuss in the early hours of the day. Taken from Nelson’s NKJV Study Bible:

  • Genesis 1:5 talks about God’s creation of the first day. Naming of things was a powerful activity in ancient times. This speaks to God’s sovereignty.
  • Exodus 34:1-3 tells of Moses going up on Mount Sinai in the morning to receive the Ten Commandments. This passage illustrates God’s mercy and the importance of being obedient to His laws.
  • Psalm 5:1-3 is a prayer for guidance and these verses refer specifically to morning.
  • Lamentations 3:22-23 speaks of God’s love being new each day for people to experience.
  • Mark 13:35 speaks of the fact that Jesus may return at any time. People must always be prepared.
  • Revelation 22:16 talks of Jesus as the Morning Star - the light in a dark world.

The morning is a special time of day - minds are fresh and uncluttered. It is a perfect time to form the attitude that will take an individual through the many busy activities that arise. And it is the perfect time for a family to recommit to each other, inviting God’s guidance into their hearts and minds.
